The Hotel La Salina Hotel Borgo di Mare occupies the carefully restored buildings of an old saltworks standing on a salt lake on the edge of the hamlet of Lingua, three kilometres from the port of Santa Marina Salina, on the Aeolian island of Salina. The saltworks was in essence a tiny borgo, or hamlet, with accommodation for the owners and workers as well as processing plants and warehouses.
The restoration is a sensitive one, preserving original elements of traditional Aeolian maritime architecture. The colours of the facades and woodwork are soft and warm, and the gardens have been planted with typcial Mediterranean species. Time-honoured building methods were used for the windows, doors and oblo (porthole-like windows), while the terraces have typical bisuoli, stone benches built into the walls, pulieri (columns), and cane roofs known as incannuciate. The patterning of the Sicilian terracotta tiles, hexagonal inside the rooms, and square on the terraces is also traditional.
Every room has a private terrace and/or balcony, nearly all of which have views of the sea. There are also wonderful views from the hotel bar: over the sea to the islands of Panarea, Stromboli, Lipari and Vulcano, and, in the distance to the southwest, the silhouette of Mount Etna. Breakfast, snacks throughout the day, and evening cocktails are served on its terrace.
La Salina Hotel has linked up with the nearby restaurant, Il Gambero, to offer guests hospitality on a pension basis, while romantic dinners can be booked at the Porto Bello restaurant overlooking the port in Santa Marina Salina. Another alternative is Il Delfino in Lingua. All three restauarants belong to members of the same family who own the hotel.
As required by law, the hotel also offers facilities for the disabled: two double rooms, and the public bathroom belonging to the bar.
It is hoped to build a saltwater pool for thalassotherapy, and a small health spa.
The management and staff of La Salina Hotel do everything possible to ensure that guests can make the most of their stay on the island. Diving trips, car and scooter rental, guided tours and massage can all be arranged.
There is a large car park for guests, and a minibus service for those who do not have their own transport.
The Rooms
La Salina Hotel Borgo di Mare has 24 tastefully furnished and accessorised rooms, each with its own balcony or terrace. The views from the hotel are ones that have not changed for a century: dawns and sunsets over the sea, the lake, and the old -- but still functioning -- lighthouse.
The hotel consists of five separate buildings linked by little paths. When the saltworks was in operation, each building had its own function -- there was a salt-mill, accomodation for the owners and workers, and a warehouse. After the closure of the saltworks in xxxx, the buildings remained abandoned until 1960, when they were inherited by Felice D'Albora, and converted into holiday houses and rooms.
Today each of the rooms, distributed throughout the five buildings, has its own character. Furnishings are tasteful and understated, and vary from room to room. Every room has telephone, air-conditioning,
fridge-bar, satellite TV, broadband internet connection, safeboxes and electronic keys.
Every room has a private terrace and/or balcony and almost all have sea views.
By Car:
From Milazzo:
‘Argoferries’, ‘N.G.I’ and ‘Siremar’ all run ferry services at least once a day to the Island. Ferries are more frequent during the summer months and booking is only necessary in August.
Parking at the hotel is free of charge.

From Milazzo:
Siremar and Ustica Lines run a regular hydrofoil service to Salina.
From Reggio Calabria and Messina:
Ustica Lines run one hydrofoil daily throughout the year. These are more frequent in the summer.
By Plane:
- Airone and Alitalia airlines fly from Milan to Reggio Calabria, and Alitalia also flies from Rome. From the airport, you can take the hydrofoil direct to Santa Marina Salina.
- From Catania Airport, there is a direct bus Milazzo (Giuntabus) and to Messina (SAIS).
