Cultural center of remarkable relief, the city of Perugia is a tourist goal of great interest for the extraordinary wealth of the artistic patrimony that it has known to conserve.
One of the monuments symbol of this city is the Fontana Maggiore, the greater fountain, realized in a single year, between 1277 and 1278, in order to inaugurate the aqueduct that from Pacciano mount doors the water in the public square, with the participation of various competences: the Venitian Bonensigna for hydraulics, the Marchis fra' Bevignate for the architecture, Nicola and Giovanni Pisano for the sculptures.
Perugia hosts one of the beautifulst Italian medieval palaces named Palazzo dei Priori, that it was built in 1293 in gotic style.
Of geat interest is also the Etruscan Arc with overlapped blocks of travertino, the monumental door is set to the northeast limit of the main street called 'cardo'.
Perugia was already famous as one of the most powerful cities in Etruria and it was the Roman emperor Augustus to call it Augusta Perusia.
Perugia was among the first cities to become a free Common and in 1540 it fell under the dominion of the Church, after a long besiege.
Pope Paul III built the Rocca Paolina as the symbol of his power.
In 1861 Perugia became part of the Reign of Italy.
