The city of Prato is located in the heart of Tuscany, in a plain set at short distance from Florence and Pistoia. City of art and prestige, it is famous for its flourishing textile activity, one of the most important centers in Italy.
A Ligurian village, Prato was inhabited by the Etruscans and then the Romans that founded the Paugus Cornius, political and commercial center. In the 6.th century it was occupied by the Longobards. The ancient fortress became the residence of the Alberti family that dominated the immense county. In 1107 the city was razed to the ground from the troops of Matilde di Toscana. While arts and commerce bloomed, the fights between Guelfi and Ghibellines were ignited and the city was taken by Roberto d'Angiò king of Naples. In 1351 Queen Giovanna sold the city to Florence to which it remained tied.
In the historical center of Prato there are many monuments among which the Castle of the Emperor or also said the fortress of S. Barbara, the Dome around which the village was developed. The Dome facade conserve works of Andrea della Robbia and in the inside there are works of Donatello and Michelozzo, the Sacro Cingolo chapel with frescoes of Agnolo Gaddi, and the Madonna del Bambino of Giovanni Pisano and other works of Paolo Uccello and Filippo Lippi. The Palazzo del Comune with its portico and the Pretorio Palace, center of the Communal Gallery, the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Carceri, the churches of San Francesco and San Domenico, all have works of great masters and other famous artists of the 1300's and the Renaisance. The Walls Painting museum and the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, the Communal and Alberti Galleries, conserve important collections that they arrive until the first of the 1900's. The Contemporary Art Center Luigi Pecci organizes shows and exibitions of the most famous modern artists and the Museo del Tessuto illustrates an interesting panoramic of the webbing art through the centuries.
