The city of Sanremo is located in the western part of the Ligurian Coastline called Riviere Ligure and it is the main town of the Riviera dei Fiori, the flowers coast. A typical charming renowned bathing locality that it rises in a wide bay, set between Capo Verde and Capo Nero, at a short distance from the Italian-French border, very much appreciated for its mild climate, the beautifulst landscape and its location geografic with the Marine Alps backwards and the Ligurian sea that bathes its coasts.
Sanremo hosts yearly the famous Festival of the Italian Song and it is one of the most active centers for the flowers cultivation, renowned in every part of the world. The most ancient part of the city is called La Pigna with the defended houses of the medieval village, dominated by the sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa, while the modern part it has been transformed from a fishermen village into an elegant tourist center of international reputation, attended from famous personages, fascinates from its deep blue sea and the intense scent of flowers.
In the past times Sanremo was named Matuzia in memory of Caio Matuzio's house, but according to a popular belief, it is instead said it was in homage to the Goddess Matuzia, the divinity of sea and aurora. In the Middle Ages it was for a long period a possession of the Genoa Church that sold it at the end of the XIII century to the Doria and De Mari families. Later on it became a free common and in 1815 the city was annexed to the Savoia reign.
The Dome of Sanremo with the high bell tower it is a church with a nave and two aisles where many valuable art works are set. On a side of the Dome it is set the medieval Baptistry and laterally is the canonical house bearing a splendid cloister that it faces the oratory of the Immaculate Conception. A little further ahead there is the market square from where the medieval historical center called La Pigna begins. It is characterized by small tightened alleys on which the high houses are set, some of them joined by arches. The palace Borea d'Olmo hosts the Civic Archaeological Museum and a little distant is set the flowers market. The municipal Casino is a beautiful palace in Art Nuveau style and it is the seat of the main events in town, one of the most visited places. Shortly ahead there is the corso Imperatrice, one of the most elegant avenue of the city where the Russian church is situated and set to a short distance there is the Marsaglia park with the auditorium in which the concerts are held. In the corso Cavallotti there are the Villa Comunale with its wide garden and the Alfred Nobel Villa, in which the illustrious scientist died and from there it begins the corso Trento e Trieste, the beautiful promenade along the lungomare.

Sanremo Casino
The great palace in art nuveau style of the Sanremo Casino was planned by the architect Eugène Ferret in 1905. Inside the Casino chips fall from the slot machines, elegant green tables are covered with fisches and the the roulette round going renders magical gambling moment. Famous artists and personages also are seen in the traditional game halls, as the one for chemin de fer, where there is a miniature racetrack simulating a horse race where people can bet.
Hanbury Botanical Gardens
Situated at Mortola Inferiore, near Ventimiglia, the Hanbury Botanical Gardens are the most important acclimatization park for exotic plants in Italy. As many as 3000 species grow in the beautiful gardens of the Villa purchased in 1867 by Sir Thomas Hanbury. Nowadays the Hanbury Botanical Gardens is a state property run by Genoa University.
