The mystic city of San Giovanni Rotondo is located in the inland of the Gargano promontory, also called the "Spur of Italy", a massive montainside isolated from the Appennine range, subject to karstic phenomena and delimited from high and scraggy coasts, in the norther part of Apulia.

The city was founded in the beginning of the past century on the ruins of a village of the IV century a.C. and in the hamlets of Sant'Egidio and Curvara there are some visible signs, as the graves or the circular baptistry, from which originates the name of San Giovanni Rotondo. During the low Middle Ages the village covered important assignments in the economic organization of the Souther part of Italy and under the Reign of the Two Sicilies it established the prices of goods. About San Giovanni Rotondo history, it is interesting to remember a vicissitude that has characterized the Renaissance of this village in which 24 patriots were assassinated by the hands of the inhabitants instigated by the Borboni. The locality has become very popular thanks to the Devout Father from Pietralcina who lived here from the 4.th of September 1916 to the 23.rd of September 1968.

Thanks to the Saint, San Giovanni Rotondo has not had necessity to take advantage of the extraordinary beauty of the landscape in the Gargano, not finding itself along the drawn particular coastline that which gave the origin of the recent tourist boom in the main bathing localities of the cape, but finding in the inside, this particular religious attraction has become useful in order to complete the tourist  development with ulterior added values, like also that one of the natural beauties of the Umbra Forest.

The religious reputation of San Giovanni Rotondo is picked, beyond that in the aspects of Saint Pio from Petralcina  life and of its miracles, also in some of the city traditional festivities, like that one of the Madonna that annually carries out in the streets of the historical center on the 15.th of August, that one of Saint Maria delle Grazie which take place in September on the last three days of the first decade. During the three days of the festivity, the picture of the Madonna is shown near the Church Matrix, a valuable painting thata belongs to the Convent of the Cappuccini friars, where Saint Pio lived.

Also the historical center of San Giovanni Rotondo is interesting to visit, the zone is mostly residential with the main part of the business activities and other churches can be visited, as that one of San Giuseppe Artigiano, Saint Nicholas and Saint Caterina, the most ancient in the historical center, the church of Sant'Egidio, the main church entitled Matrice di San Leonardo, with the precious statue of San Michele Arcangelo on the entrance door, the churches of Sant'Orsola, Madonna di Loreto, Sant'Onofrio and finally the ancient Church of San Giovanni Battista.

In San Giovanni Rotondo, the accommodation activities for the great tourist-religious flow interested in the cult of the Devout Father, are set most exclusively around to the Convent of the Cappuccini friars and by the slopes of the hill, where a great number of hotels, lodges, bed and breakfast and guest houses are available.
