Hotels Metaponto

Metaponto is a small village set on the Ionian coast, between the Bradano and Basento rivers, near the border with Puglia region. In addition to being an important archaeological site, the city has become in recent years a popular beach resort, attended by many foreigners. During the summer this area contains a large number of tourists thanks to the numerous campgrounds, resorts and hotels overlooking the beautiful coastline. The city boasts a long sandy beach equipped with seaside resorts, restaurants and discos for the night.

Metaponto has ancient origins, in fact it had contacts with Micenei and later with the Greeks, which became a colony between the seventh and sixth centuries b.C. This was a very flourishing moment for the city, which became the first trade center of the Ionian Sea and it possessed its own currency. In this period was built the temple of Tavole Palatine and it was designed the urban structure. With the arrival of the Romans this area was quickly depopulated and became a big swamp. Of the old village remained only the port, which in the Middle Ages was called Torre di Mare.

At the end of the XIX century it began the work of reclamation and the study of ancient ruins. Nowday in Metaponto there is a great archaeological park that rises o the rest of the Greek colony. The temple of Tavole Palatine, which still keeps fifteen Doric columns, stands on the hill of Chora. The most important building is the temple of Apollo Licio, dating back to the sixth century b.C., which was partly rebuilt with recovering the original materials. In the area of the port there is, finally, the Norman castle and the church of the Santa Trinità, both of XI century.
