Ischia has an extension of 46.33 sq. km with a coastline developping for over 35 km, it is the biggest island in the Gulf of Naples.
This mountainous island, volcanic in origin, lies off Capo Miseo, still showing the evidence of its eruption signs.
The island shape has a rather varied territory, mainly hilly landscaped with high indented coastline.
Ischia was inhabited since Prehistoric times and it became a holiday resort isle as early as the Roman times.
It was thanks to volcanism that this peculiar activity started, enriching Ischia island with springs and fumaroles which give off vapours in several parts of the land.
The isle is nowdays divided into six municipalities: Ischia, Casamicciola Terme, Lacco Ameno, Forio, Serrara Fontana and Barano which are the most important centres and thermal waters have turned out to be a gold mine for the island, in the true sense of the word, to be exploited for tourism purposes.
Nowhere else, except Ischia you can find thermal gardens in the immediate vicinity of the sea boasting Spa Centres with swimming pools at different temperatures.
Some of these thermal gardens stay open all the year round and are attended by international tourists of all ages.
On the island of Ischia it is possible to undergo therapies for rheumatic diseases, arthritis, obesity, gynaecological and nervous ailment treatments.
