Alassio is a famous tourist bathing center situated in the heart of the Riviera Ligure di Ponente (sunset coastline) in the province of Savona. A very elegant locality stretching in a charming bay set between Capo Mele and Capo Santa Croce, renowned for its "muretto" a wall, the tourist port and its magnificent sandy beach, the largest one in the Coast. Alassio is attended from many tourists during the beautiful season, easy to reach along the A10 Genoa-Ventimiglia motorway exit of Albenga, by rails (the train station of Alassio is situated in the city center) and from the Genoa airport C. Colombo or the small turist one in Villanova d'Albenga.
The city of Alassio has its main activity in the tourist-hotel accommodation, very much demanded in summer and it proposes a good receptivity, do not lack prestigious hotels, good lodges and residential aparthotels. Shortly also bed and brekfast and farm holidays can be found in the green hillside area dominating the sea.
Of medieval origin, the feud of Alassio was subordinated to the control of the Gallinara Benedictines in the XI century and later on the city was tied to Albenga, from which it obtained its independence in the XVI century. It then belonged to Genoa Republic and it participated to the war against France, and wide autonomies from Genoa were granted, especially economic, stimulating trade exchanges with Spain and Germany. In 1797 Napoleon added the new Liguria Republic territories to the First French Empire and in 1815 it entered in the Reign of Sardinia and from 1861 it was part of the Reign of Italy.
In Alassio city center the characteristic alleys open on small squares and the tight houses are aligned on the seafront, from the beach it catches a glimpse over the Gallinara island. The famous "muretto" is situated by the town hall and the main monuments on spot are the church of Sant'Ambrogio with frescoes of the Genoa painting school, the sanctuary of the Madonna della Guardia that rises on the Tirasso mount, the tourist port and the chapel. In the outskirtses of Alassio the Romanesque church of Santa Croce deserves a visit, it rises on a sheer drop with a park, from which one can enjoy a panoramic view over the so called "Baia del Sole", the sun bay that is reachable covering the via Julia Augusta, the ancient roman road which was built by emperor Augusto, after the conquest of Liguria.
The city is an ideal destination for the sport lovers: sailing, golfing in the 18 holes Garlenda golf club, tennis, cycling, mountain bike, windsurf, immersions, horse riding, trekking and more. Alassio is also a social city and it offers discos and night clubs, important events take place all year round, as fashion, sport, show (the beauty competition "Miss Muretto") and culture (the Literary Prize an Author for Europe). Moreover pines and olives trees, bloomed plants and flowers will accompany your walks in the green of the Mediterranean flora.
