Forlì is an enchanting town, set in a fruitful valley close to the hillside, crossed by the river Montone that rise in the Tuscan-Emilian Appennines. The city is located in the heart of Romagna, along the Via Emilia, in an area where natural beautys are intertwined with the history and traditions of this place. Forlì has always reserved a large space to culture, as witnessed by its important university and many museums. The city was founded by the Romans in the second century b.C. and for its central location along the Emilia way has always been a fervent centre of exchange between the plain and the sea. Forlì reached maximum development at the end of the Middle Ages, when it was ruled for some centuries by the family of Ordelaffi. During this period the city was endowed with a specific town-planning and was embellished with beautiful buildings. Even nowaday the old town retains its original form with the main ways that set out from the central Piazza Saffi.

On this square overlooking the most interesting monuments such as the Palazzo del Podestà and the Basilica of San Mercuriale, with a beautiful Romanesque façade. Nearby stands the Cathedral where there is the Chapel of Madonna del Fuoco, patron of the city. Walking through the streets of the centre you can admire the elegant Renaissance palaces, which often host interesting art exhibitions. The Palace Merenda is, for example, home of the art gallery where are on view important works by Canova, Beato Angelico and the valuable collection Verzocchi.
