Maratea is a renowned resort that is set in the short stretch of Tyrrhenian coast of Basilicata. The village overlooks the Gulf of Policastro with its 34 km of shoreline. Cliffs and coves, caves and sandy beaches are frame one of the most beautiful and unspoilt of Tyrrhenian Sea. The coastline is characterized by a dense vegetation, typically Mediterranean, reaching almost to the sea. Behind there are the mountains of Appennins, covered with green woods, from which you can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding rich territory.

The ancient village of Maratea lies on the slopes of Mount San Biagio and is yet again a good example of a traditional town of the Basilicata region. The historical center is a labyrinth of small streets, which wind through ancient arches and stairways. The viewpoint houses the statue of the Redentore, 21 meters high, that is overhanging the gulf below. The village boasts 44 churches, many of which are rich in fine works of art. The Santa Maria Maggiore one has a beautiful medieval bell tower and inside houses a wooden chorus of '400 besides considerable baroque stuccos.

Along the coast there is the village of Marina di Maratea, located approximately 5 km from the ancient center. Thanks of its natural beautys it is widely regarded as the Jewel of the Tirreno sea and nowday it's an elegant seaside resort. The village boasts many beaches including the most popular are Cala Jannita, Calavecchia and Macarro. An important tourist attraction are the caves of Sciabella and of Meraviglie. Very picturesque is the little port, with the few houses of fishermen and the typical boats. From the town you can reach in a short time the National Parks of Cilento and Pollino.
