10 Hotels in Treviso, Italy
Treviso is a charming quiet city of the Veneto region, not far from Venice, to which it is often compared for the canals that cross it and that gives a great appeal. Despite it has nearly 100,000 inhabitants the town is still on human scale and therefore the quality of life is privileged. The historical center is a true jewel: the frescoed houses facades lie on the channels, long porticoes, elegant palaces of the communal period render this place unique.
In this atmosphere of magical harmony a monumental, historical and artistic heritage of great value is guarded.
Treviso was founded by Veneto-celtiche populations but it became an important center when it passed under the Roman domination. After the empire fall for a short time it was an independent municipality, before its assimilation by Venice Republic in 1389. The fidelity of Treviso to the "Serenissima" carried to the construction, in the XVI century, of the town-walls that still today encloses the historical center.
The heart of city is the Dome square, dominated by the San Pietro Cathedral, notable for the crypt and the Cappella Malchiostro, with frescoes by Pordenone and above all the Annunciation by Tiziano, and Calmaggiore, sure the most characteristic street of the center with elegant storees and buildings of Renaissance period. This road leads to Piazza dei Signori, where the famous Palazzo dei 300 can be admired, so called because here the members of the communal council gathered.
The Dominican church of San Nicoḷ deserves a visit too for its frescoes dating from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century. Some of the columns are decorated with paintings by Tommaso da Modena, the major artist in northern Italy in the years immediately after Giotto's death. The most famous works of art are the SS Jerome and Agnes, but for a demonstration of his talents you have to visit the neighbouring Seminario, where the chapter is decorated with a series of forty Portraits of Members of the Dominican Order.
But the entire Treviso district is rich of architectonic and artistic beauties, like the elegant villas set in the hilly landscape and charming villages like Asolo, Conegliano and Vittorio Veneto.
