The local economy is based on the town's famous Vino Nobile and Rosso di Montepulciano and on August 29 a wine barrel race named "Brav́o" take part.
It is a competition amid the different hamlets of the town running up and down the streets and there is a procession in 13th-century dress.
Montepulciano is the largest Municipality in Valdichiana at it has six other villages: Abbadia di Montepulciano, Acquaviva di Montepulciano, Gracciano, Montepulciano Stazione, S. Albino and Valiano.
