Gallipoli is located on the west side of the Ionian Sea, in the Taranto Gulf, a city rich in natural beauties and history set on the western Salento region coastline in Apulia.
A Greek colony, its name means charming town, which was later conquered by the Romans and its suggestive ancient city, with the historical buildings and walls, has oriental features and it rises on a calcareous island connected to the mainland promontory by a seventeenth century stoney bridge.
The principal wall was built around the beginning of the 16.th century to protect the city against enemies, and it was redefined the end of the 19.th century taking the actual panoramic appearance where you can admire the Greek Fountain, the Castle fortress, Sant'Agate Cathedral and the Civic Museum.
The new part of Gallipoli is crossed by the corso Roma avenue that divides the city in two parts called Sirocco and Tramontana, the south and north winds, and it features a city with modern constructions that have mainly replaced the ancient palaces.
North of Gallipoli it begins the Neretina coastline, while in the south, along the sandy shoreline there is the bay of Pizzo cape with the rich Mediterranean lush and on the sea is set the island of Sant'Andrea, famous for its wonderful colored sea bottom.
