L'Aquila takes its name from the many water springs and it is the main town of Abruzzo.
Next the to the ancient city walls is the Fountain with 99 Spouts, a masterpiece where each one of the fountain masks represent a castle beeing bilt in twon.
The Castle was built in the XVI century, following an uprising of the city against the Spaniards and it is one of the most outstanding fortresses of that period in Italy.
At the present the Castle hosts the National Museum of Abruzzo.
The Museum has been divided into various sections, among which a Paleonthological section that contains an Elephas Meridionalis, a fossalized mammoth found near the town.
Another section of Sacred Art shows frescoes, sculptures and paintings and furthermore in the Castle, many cultural activities that take place all year round.
In the historical center of L'Aquila there are varous Palaces such as: Palazzo Franchi Cappelli, Palazzo Carli, Casa Vicentini, Palazzo Quinzi, Palazzo Dragonetti, Palazzo Margrit of Austria, Palazzo Centi and Palazzo Camponeschi.
Many churches testify a notable art and historic value, such as the Duomo di San Massimo, la chiesa del Suffragio, la chiesa di San Bernardino, la chiesa di Santa Maria di Collemaggio that hosts the coffin of Pope Celestino V and boasts the Porta Santa (the Holy Door) the only one outside Rome where yearly it is possible to plead for indulgence, the Roman church of Santa Maria Paganica and the church of Santa Giusta.
