Potenza is the capital town of Basilicata region and it is located in the upper valley of Basento river with the Lucanian Apennines on the backwards.
Potenza town center is in the piazza Matteotti square were also the Palazzo del Comune stands and shortly nearby is the Cathedral of San Gerardo, the town Saint and during his celebration day there is an ancient traditional festival in town called "la Sfilata dei Turchi" (the Turks parade) a rural exibition that revives the propitiatory rite of the farmers to cornfields.
The beatiful church of San Francesco hosts inside a Renaissance Sepulcher, the table of Madonna del Terremoto and other valuable paintings in Byzantine style.
Inside the Provincial Archeological Museum, in the Santa Maria zone, are exposed the prehistoric evidence of the area and other Greek or Roman works among which is the Tempietto and the Statuina di Persefone in Trono.
Potenza has pre-Roman origins and during the centruies the city had many dominions such as the Lombardians, Swahias and Angevins. Beside of the invasions Potenza lso shows signs of destruction caused by earthquakes and bombardments during the last world war.
