Mazara del Vallo is a beautiful town set on Sicily west coast, along the Mazzaro river, between cape Feto and cape Granicola. The surrounding area is mostly hilly and it is cultivated with vineyards and olive groves, while poor is the surface covered by woods. The main economic activities are agriculture and height peach, for which the city has the largest fleet in Italy. Just one of these fishing boat has recovered in 1998 a bronze statue of Greek origin, known as Dancing Satyr, which is now stored at Mazara in the Regional Museum of Sant'Egidio.
Thanks to its strategic location right in the middle of the Mediterranean sea, the city has known in its history many dominations, who left important evidence in its rich urban structure. These places were originally inhabited by the Phoenicians who founded an important commercial emporium with the name of Mazar, namely fortress. After the Roman age, Mazara del Vallo experienced a period of great splendor with the arrival of the Arabs, who began the conquest of Sicily from here. With the Norman occupation the city was supplied with a castle, of which nowaday remains only some ruins, and several churches.
The main monument is the Cathedral which was built by the Norman king Roger in the place of a large Mosque . The facade was completely restored later in the eighteenth century in baroque style. The church overlooks Piazza della Repubblica, the heart of the city, characterized by beautiful buildings, porches and centered on the statue of San Vito, the patron citizen. Obviously Mazara del Vallo is also an important seaside resort thanks to its long sandy beach that stretches right of the Mazaro river. This area is particularly appreciated by skin divers for the beauty and variety of fauna submarine.
