Bisceglie is an important town of Puglia, located along the coast of the Adriatic Sea, a few kilometers north of Bari. Its name probably derives from a wild oak widespread in the area, which is also the town emblem. The city faces the splendid Gulf of Manfredonia in an area full of great natural beauty. The economy of the area is mainly based on agriculture and tourism, both seaside and cultural, thanks to the many monuments and works of art that Bisceglie offers.
Bisceglie was founded by the Normans in the XI century and the old town still retains the typical medieval structure. During the Aragonese domination the city was enriched with valuable civic and religious buildings and it was equipped with impressive works of fortification, still visible. The main street is Corso Umberto I, which ends in the square where lies the Castello Svevo, beautifully preserved. The main city monument is the Cathedral of St. Peter, dating to the thirteenth century. Because of the different earthquakes the church has been amended several times, and nowaday it has a baroque facade while the interior has kept Romanesque features.
Not far away there are the church of St. Matthew, of XI century, and the palace of Ammazzalorsa, one of the most beautiful private residences of the center. The country around Bisceglie preserves, immersed among secular olive groves, several dolmen, imposing megalithic monuments dating back to prehistoric times. The most important is the Chianca, with a well-preserved tomb. In the Museo Civico Archeologico are exposed many findings of the territory. The area is also renowned for its beautiful coastline, predominantly sandy and characterized by an exceptionally clear sea.
