Benevento is a lively city of the Campania region, set on the hill top at the confluence of Sabato and Calore rivers, in a wide valley surrounded by wooded mountains. The origins go back to the VIII century b.C., when the zone was inhabited by Sanniti, that it called Maleventum. In the 275 b.C the Romans conquered the city and they changed the name in Beneventum in order to testify the good event of victory. Thanks to its strategic position on the Appia way it becames a flourishing trades center between Rome and Brindisi. During the Middle Age it was a ducal seat until 1053 when becames a possession of Pope, situation that lasted until the birth of the Reign of Italy.

Benevento conserves monuments that testify its splendor in the roman era. In the heart of the old quarter there are the remains of the Roman Theatre, built during the reign of Hadrian, that seated 20000 people. But the major remnant of that period is the magnificent Arch of Trajan, erected to guard the entrance from the Appia way and that conserve bas-relieves which showing the emperor in various scenes of triumph, power and generosity. Not far there is Corso Garibaldi, an elegant thoroughfare lined with stores and ancient palaces.

The way leads to the main square of the city, where lies the Dome, that is an almost total reconstruction of its thirteenth-century romanesque original. What's left of its famous bronze doors, believed to be Byzantine, is now stashed inside. At the end of Corso Garibaldi the Rocca dei Rettori rises, center of the governors of the city, built in 1321 on the hill that dominates all the town.
The visitor to Benevento can also subtly discover minor urbanistic and architectural testimonies in the streets of the historical centre like beautiful courtyards, porticoes, roof terraces, arches and small Baroque buildings.
