1 Apartment Rentals a Stromboli, Italy
Stromboli is one of the Aeolian islands, located in the Tyrrhenian sea, off the north coast of Sicily. It is known since ancient times for its volcano, one of the most active in Europe and according to legend here stood the palace of Aeolus. Despite the regularity of the explosions people have always lived on the island, since the sixteenth century when in San Vincenzo there was a small village of fishermen. After that was nearly abandoned during the Middle Ages, Stromboli experienced a period of splendor in the nineteenth century when its sailing boats cross the Mediterranean.
Nowaday, the main economic resource is tourism, concentrated mainly in the summer months. In this period of the year the population of Stromboli increased from about 100 people to nearly 4000. The island strikes visitors since their arrival by ferry for the imposing volcano that stands nearly 1000 meters above sea level and for the variety of its landscape. The eastern side is green and covered by a luxuriant vegetation, large olive trees and vineyards. The other side is on the contrary harsh and bare because of frequent lava flows reaching the sea.
The main tourist attraction of Stromboli is the spectacle offered by the volcano during its eruptions. We can watch this phenomenon also from the sea on boats that take tourists up to off. The island is rich of small paths and trails to be made on foot or by mountai-bikes that allow you to discover also the hidden corners. The most famous track is the one that lead to the crater and along the way lies the volcanological observatory. The beaches of the island are all formed by black sand and the most important are Forgia Vecchia and Ficogrande, while some little bays are reachable only by boat.
