Hotel Milazzo.

Milazzo is a beautiful city set at the base of a thin spit of land poking for 7 km into the Tyrrhenian Sea. It's the main port of departure for ferries and hydrofoils that go to the Aeolian islands, which are located just a few miles away. The city was founded by the inhabitants of Zancle, today's Messina, in 716 b.C., when it was built the first fortress. The town was always an important merchant center of eastern Sicily thanks to its strategic location near the strait and in its water was fought the decisive naval battle between the Romans and Carthaginians during the first Punic War.

After the fall of the Roman Empire it was conquered by the Arabs, who began the construction of the first nucleus of the castle. The fulfilment of medieval village was completed by Frederick II of Swabia, who transformed Milazzo in a military headquarters. All the most interesting buildings in the city dating back to this period. Inside the walls of the castle, which still retains the Norman tower, lies the Old Cathedral, built in 1608 in Baroque style. Also in the old part of the town deserves a visit to the Santuario di San Francesco di Paola, which stands on the ruins of the church built by the same saint.

The modern part of Milazzo faces the sea and is home to the New Cathedral, which contains some valuable works of art. The heart of downtown is certainly Caio Duilio square, where takes place every morning a colorful fish market. From here begins the promenade Garibaldi leading up to the tip of the promontory, where we can admire a magnificent panorama. To the west there is a long sandy beach, which is very popular in summer, and a coastal road leading to the Cave of Polyphemus, where would take place the mythical episode of Ulysses with the Cyclop.
