It is the most ancient of the archipelago and with the rocks and cliffs surrounding form a single volcano now almost entirely submerged by the sea. The highest peak is Pizzo del Corvo, 420 meters above sea level. The west side is characterized by rocky walls and an high coast very jagged. The eastern side, instead gradually descends gently to the sea resulting in a flat areas, cultivated with vineyards and olive groves, and small beaches.
Panarea was already inhabited in prehistoric times as evidenced by the village dating back to the Bronze Age, which is located in the hamlet of Cape Milazzese. Even today we can see the remains of some huts in the area and here were found materials of Mycenaean origin. In the Middle Ages the island is going through a period of decline due to the pirate raids, which decimate the population. Nowaday the residents are about 200, but become 2000 in the summer. The main source of income is tourism, which began in the late fifties, with the discovery of this island by adventurous tourists.
The success is due mainly to its beautiful landscape and to the tranquility of these places that allow tourists to have a direct contact with nature. The most important landing of Panarea is at San Pietro, a picturesque village characterized by the typical white houses, that is located on the eastern side. Nearby there is the main sandy beach of the island, the most frequented in summer. Upon sailing by boat around Panarea we can discover small bays and inlets reachable only by sea as the beautiful Cala Junco.
