Villa San Giovanni is a modern city that lies along the shores of the Straits of Messina, a few kilometers south of Reggio Calabria. In its territory is Punta Pezzo, the closest point between the two coasts. Nowaday it is an important railway and port junction, in fact depart from here all ferry direct to Sicily. Its economy is based on trade, thanks to its very busy port and on the production of citrus. Thanks to its long coastline, characterized by beautiful sandy beaches, the area attracts a large number of tourists, mostly concentrated in the summer months.

In history this area has always had a great importance to its strategic position on the Strait of Messina. During the Roman period by the city passed all commercial traffic for Sicily. After the empire fall, the town was completely abandoned, because of frequent incursions Saracen. Only at the end of the eighteenth century was officially created Villa San Giovanni, which joins in its territory all villages scattered on the coast and on the surrounding hills. Until the mid'900 the city was especially famous for the production of silk. In 1908 a terrible earthquake completely destroyed the village.

In subsequent years began a slow and difficult reconstruction, which gave birth to a beautiful town with a plan regular and modern buildings. The only monuments of artistic interest are the Duomo, in Norman style, and the church of Saints Cosma and Damiano. But Villa San Giovanni is mainly a beach resort. In the hamlet of Cannitello there is the largest beach which enjoys a unique view, up to the Aeolian Islands. Behind the coast is a beautiful promenade, with luxurious villas and restaurants.
