Cervia is a famous seaside resort in the province of Ravenna which develops along the Adriatic coast. It is dubbed the "city of salt" because in its territory extends far 828 hectares of salt works. Many of these are part of the Regional Park of the Po Delta, a large natural environment characterized by a rich flora and fauna. During the summer season worth a visit the Salina Camillone where you can observe the traditional method of harvest and processing of salt. Nearby there is a modern spa that uses the water of this process, rich in therapeutic properties.
The city was founded by the Greeks with the name of Ficocle but it was completely razed to the ground by the Byzantines in 709, as it combatted with Ravenna in the war against Constantinople. The reconstruction took place in the ninth century, when the name was changed to Cervia. The village was built in the middle of salt works because it was a more secure position, but the hygiene conditions were very poor and in a short time the population was decimated. Only in the seventeenth century Pope Innocent XII ordered the movement of the city on the coast, where it is today.
Currently Cervia is a lively and elegant seaside resort with over 250 lidos located along the sandy coast. The structures are modern and equipped with all the comforts to satisfy every requests. The city boasts a beautiful promenade along the sea with elegant shops, restaurants and fashion clubs. Cervia is not only sea, but also art and culture. In its territory you can admire many churches, each of which has its own history. The most interesting is the Cathedral dell'Assunta, which preserves precious paintings from the seventeenth century.
