Cesenatico is a famous tourist destination overlooking the Adriatic Sea, halfway between Rimini and Ravenna. Thanks to its active port is considered the capital of Adriatic fishing. The city has ever had in its history a strong bond with the sea, which is its main economic resource. Nowaday Cesenatico is in fact one of the most famous seaside resorts of Emilia Romagna region, which receives about three million tourists every year, thanks to its long sandy beach. On the Carducci seafront there are elegant hotels and restaurants, very famous for their seafood.
The origins of Cesenatico go back to the fourteenth century, when the city of Cesena built the first fortress and the port to have an outlet to the sea. In a short time the small village became an important centre for trade in the Adriatic Sea. In 1502 Cesare Borgia asked Leonardo da Vinci design of the new port, which still survives today. In fact, the original plan also included a long channel that was supposed to reach Cesena, but was never realized. In the Floating Museum of Marine History are exhibited several examples of traditional boats fully restored.
Nowaday the port of Cesenatico, easily identifiable from afar for the great skyscraper, it is frequented mostly by recreational craft. The only monuments of the city are the church of San Giacomo and the library containing some findings of Roman age. The symbol of Cesenatico are actually its lidos, which in summer are the recreation center of the city. Not far from the center there is the fraction of Ponente, characterized by a large number of green areas and modern sports facilities.
