In ancient times Salsomaggiore Terme was nicknamed the "citadel of salt" because in its subsoil there are large pools of water from which was extracted the precious substance. The thermal activity began only in 1839 when the doctor Lorenzo Berzieri discovered the extraordinary therapeutic properties of these waters. The first strucure that housed the spa was built in the early '900 in Art Nouveau style and it was dedicated precisely Berzieri. Since then, in the city began a remarkable urban development.
Inside the park Regina Margherita lies the latest spa building of Luigi Zoja, opened in 1968. Salsomaggiore Terme boasts over than 100 hotels, all of great prestige and elegance.
