Hotel Iglesias.

Iglesias is an important town situated in the historical region of Sulcis, in the south-west part of Sardinia. The city is a few kilometres from the coast and it is surrounded by a landscape that still keeps a lush vegetation. The old town also boasts a significant historic and artistic heritage, with churches and monuments perfectly preserved. The territory also offers a beautiful coastline, on which face some of the most beautiful beaches of Sardinia region.

Iglesias was founded by Pisans in the thirteenth century, even though this area was crowded already in Punic and Roman age. Since antiquity, in fact, the area was known for its abundance of silver in its subsoil. During the rule of the powerful family Della Gherardesca, Iglesias reached its peak of splendour, much to be the most important center in Sardinia after Cagliari. During this period the city was enriched with churches and palaces and it was equipped with defensive walls and Castle Salvaterra, still visible at the top of the hill.

The main historical monument of Iglesias is the Cathedral of Santa Chiara, built in the late thirteenth century and then enlarged in '500. The facade retains its original appearance in Romanesque style, while the interior has been transformed into a Gothic-Catalan style. But the real tourist attraction of Iglesias is the magnificent coast, characterized by rocks with colours and shapes very suggestive. This part of Sardinia is rich in marine caves, some of extraordinary beauty. Among these is worth visiting the cave of Santa Barbara, with crystals that cover the rocky walls, that make it unique in the world.
