Porto Cesareo is a lovely resort situated on the border between the provinces of Lecce and Taranto. The old part of the town faces the Ionian sea in a small peninsula, at the end of which lies the sixteenth century tower Caesarea. Nowaday Porto Cesareo is a famous seaside resort that boasts a wide sandy shoreline, featuring picturesque bays and a sea extraordinarily clear. The town is part of the marine reserve with the same name, one of three in Puglia region, set up to protect the rich flora and fauna of the area.

This area was already inhabited in prehistoric times, as shown by the numerous artefacts that are exposed in the Archaeological Museum of Taranto. During the long Roman domination the village was called Portus Sasinae and it was an important stopover trade. After a period of complete abandonment the town returned to be attended in the Middle Ages, when some monks built an abbey. From the fifteenth century it began the construction of the numerous sighting towers that can still be admired along the coast around Porto Cesareo.

In recent years the locality has been transformed from a small villagge of fisherman in a popular tourist site, equipped with all services and comfort. Porto Cesareo boasts 17 km of beautiful beaches faced with a series of small islands covered with a rich vegetation and inhabited by unique species throughout the Mediterranean. The most famous is the island of rabbits, which can be reached from the coast to swim. For fans of diving this area offers beautiful backdrops with the tropical appearance. Finally, along the scenic road that runs on the coast we arrive at Cape Prosciutto, which marks the border with the province of Taranto.
