Rome is the capital of Italy and houses the Popes dwelling in the Vatican. His comune is one of the largest and most populous of Europe. The historic centre, with testimonies of about 2,800 years of history, is listed by Unesco as a World Heritage Site and makes the city one of the most popular tourism destination in the world. The City has a huge artistic heritage, with churches and baroque palaces, ruins of imperial age and museums with magnificent works of art. But it is nice just to walk in the streets of the center, discover the hidden squares, gardens and breathe the atmosphere of a city unique in the world.
Rome is called the "Eternal City" because it has a history of almost three millennia. According to tradition it was founded in 753 b.C. on the Palatine hill, where the first settlement was built. From this moment began a rapid expansion which led Rome to become in the first and second century AD "Caput Mundi", capital of the world. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the city retained a significant importance since it became the seat of the papacy and the center of Christianity. In 1870 he was named capital of the Reign of Italy.
The symbol of Rome is without doubt the Colosseum, a massive amphitheater where the games of gladiators were held. This is the starting point of Fori Imperiali, with the remains of splendid palaces and public buildings where took place the political activities. The city is full of grand monuments that testify the greatness and splendor of the Roman Empire. The luxurious Caracalla Spa, Trajan's Markets, the Pantheon and the Domus Aurea are just a few places worth a visit.
During the Renaissance Popes enriched Rome of magnificent churches and palaces, attracting the best artists of that time. In the sixteenth century Michelangelo worked on the design of St. Peter's Basilica and he painted the Sistine Chapel. In the seventeenth century Bernini created the famous Trevi Fountain and the city was filled with luxurious palaces in Baroque style. In the heart of Rome there is the State of the Vatican, which in addition to the superb St Peter's Basilica hosts the Vatican Museum, the largest collection of works of art in the world.

The Colisuem
The Coliseum rises among the Palatine hill, the Celian hill and the Oppian hill. Its construction was begun by emperor Vespasian and was completed by his son Titus in 80 A.D. At first, in the amphitheater, gladiatorial shows, consisting in fights to the death between men and beasts, took place: it is there that, later on, the first Christians were cruelly killed by beasts. Afterwards the Coliseum was neglected, which provoked its rapid deterioration.
