Hotel Anagni and the Ciociaria.

Anagni is a pretty town in the province of Frosinone, set in the heart of Ciociaria. This famous region, rich in history and tradition, takes its name from "Cioce", the characteristic shoes once worn by the inhabitants. The city is placed on a rocky spur overlooking the below valley of the Sacco river. The town has always been a great tradition in tourism thanks to its artistic beautys and to the numerous nature paths that the territory surrounding offers to tourists.

The ancient origins have bequeathed a precious cultural heritage, so much so that today it is the richest city of art in Ciociaria. Anagni was founded by Ernici but it was conquered by the Romans in 311 b.C. Since the Middle Ages it was rightly called the "City of Popes" for being the birthplace of four major pontiffs: Innocent III, Gregory IX, Alexander IV and Boniface VIII. In the course of history the town has always maintained a certain well-being, because it was considered a sort of capital of the Papal States.

The principal monument of Anagni is the Cathedral of Santa Maria which stands on the ruins of the Acropolis and it is one of the most important examples of Romanesque art of Lazio. The church was built in the XI century but was then restructured with influences of Gothic style. Very interesting is the crypt that preserves precious frescoes and a rich floor. Next there is the museum that houses sacred objects donated by Pope Boniface VIII. Worth a visit the picturesque Casa Barnekow, a typical medieval building, which owes its name to the Swedish nobleman which bought it in the middle dell'800.
