Genoa is the capital of Liguria region and one of the main cities of Italy. Thanks to its port, one of the most important of the Mediterranean, is a busy commercial and industrial center, with a great exhibition area. The city lies along the coast for about 30 km from Voltri to Sant'Ilario. At his shoulders rise the hills and the imposing chain of the Apennines. The centre, which is spread around the old port, preserves all traces of the glorious past of Genoa, and since 2006 is part of the World Heritage list of UNESCO.

The city was founded by the Ligurians, who settled in the hills adjacent to the coast. In Roman times the town also developed downstream and began the first commercial activities related to the port. From the XI century Genoa became an autonomous municipality and quickly put up its marine traffic, up to be one of the four Maritime Republics. The golden age was the thirteenth century, when the city had colonies all over the Mediterranean and its ships sailed everywhere. After frequent clashes with other naval powers it will lead to a slow decline. The most distinguished citizen of Genoa was Christopher Columbus, who in 1492 discovered America.

Walking through the streets of the old town you can see buildings of all historical periods. On Castello Hill, the place of the first urban settlement, we see the typical Roman urban structure, and here there are many churches in Romanesque style. Around the old port is developing a network of narrow alleys and squares dating back to the Middle Ages. The main monument of this historical period is the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, built between the twelfth and the fourteenth century. The facade has three portals and is flanked by two bell towers. The interior, with three naves, boasts frescoes and decorations of great value.

Just outside the old town lies the Lantern, a large beacon of 117 meters, which is the symbol of Genoa. The city also boasts a large number of palaces of Renaissance times, belonged to the most important noble families. Nowaday many of these buildings house museums and art galleries. Also worth visiting the Aquarium, the largest in Europe, with fish from all over the world. Finally, the city boasts a renowned cuisine and "pesto alla genovese", who is preparing with basil sauce, is the typical dish.
