The Westernmost state in Europe after Iceland, Portugal also occupies the western part of the Iberian Peninsula. Even though the country faces the Atlantic Ocean entirely, owing to its close ties with Spain and other states spaeking Romance languages, as well as for its Mediterranean climate, Portugal is usually considered a Mediterranean country.

One of the advantages of Portugal is the geographical position, which, thanks to the winds from the Atlantic, allows the country to enjoy fresh, almost unpolluted air. To all this, we may add the variety of landscapes, which vary from North to South depending on its changing climatic conditions. The coast of Portugal is its main tourist attraction: to the north, the Costa Verde is an area rich in forests and large sandy beaches that stretches around the city of Porto and is also an important wine production district. In the centre of the country, the Costa da Prata is instead a flatter coast with sandy dunes. Further south, the Lisbon Coast and the Costa Dourada form the expanse that houses the most famous seaside resorts and stands out because of its lively nightlife, restaurants and casinos.

It is the region of Algarve, the southern coastline which enjoys the typical Mediterranean climate, to be the main attraction of Portugal. Even the Azores, which are located in the Atlantic Ocean 1500 km from Lisbon, belong to the country together with  Madeira, the island 600 km west of the coast of Morocco, which has a sub-tropical climate.

From the point of view of historical and artistic value, in Portugal there are first-hand accounts of different dominations, from examples of Roman art to works of Islamic influence in the Manueline style, a composite style made up of  Renaissance, Gothic and Oriental elements. The main artistic centres are Coimbra, Evora and Lisbon, the Portuguese capital.
