Spain, a parliamentary monarchy occupying most of the Iberian Peninsula, is a country in south-western Europe, characterized by a mainly mountainous territory. The principal reliefs are the plateau of Meseta Central in the heart of the country, the Pyrenees, which divide it from France, and the system of Andalusia, which culminates in Sierra Nevada to the south.

Spain means also sun, sea, coasts and islands. To the north, in the Bay of Biscay, the coasts are high and compact. The southern coasts of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic instead alternate high and low beaches. It is this various landscape, together with the climate and the Spanish culture, which contributes to create many different tourist regions within a single country.

To the north, the main tourist areas in Spain are the Basque country, with famous resorts such as San Sebastian and Bilbao, the region of Asturias and Galicia, where Santiago de Compostela, religious centre of international repute and one of the most charming cities in Spain, is located.

The main attraction of Mediterranean Spain are the coasts. Just to mention a few names, we recommend the Costa Brava, which abounds in entertainments and is animated by a lively nightlife, the Costa Dorada and the Costa Blanca, the coastal province of Alicante. The Mediterranean Spain includes Barcelona, the historical capital of Catalonia, and certainly one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities in Europe.

The southern area of the country includes Andalusia, where the Muslim influence has left an indelible mark on the customs and monuments of cities such as Cordoba and Seville. The Costa del Sol, which runs around the city of Malaga, is one of best equipped and best known tourist areas in Spain, thanks to the fame of exclusive places like Marbella and Torremolinos

The central part of Spain is perhaps the least visited, but it boasts a considerable historical and artistic heritage, with cities such as Avila, Segovia, Toledo and Navarre. Madrid, the capital of the country, is a modern and active city in terms of culture, with numerous art galleries and museums; it is also renowned for the nightlife and the night bustle that characterizes the city every night.
Last but not least, from the perspective of the tourist, is the archipelago of the Balearic Islands, situated in the Mediterranean sea, together with the Canary Islands, of volcanic origin and located in the Atlantic Ocean off the African coast.
