Agrigento is situated on a plateau surrounded by the Hypsas and Akragas rivers which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea on the southern coast of Sicily. The city was founded by Greeks in 581 b.C. with the name Agrakas. The period of maximum splendor was the fifth century b.C. when it was one of the richest colonies of Magna Graecia. With the advent of Roman and then of Byzantine for the city began a slow and inexorable decline. During this period the inhabitants largely abandoned the lower parts of the town and moved up to the hill top. After it went to the Normans, Agrigento was made a diocese and was embellished with numerous churches and palaces.
The Valley of the Temples is the best known place of Agrigento and its monuments testify the splendor of the colony, which Pindaro called "the most beautiful city of mortals." In this great valley we can admire the remains of seven Doric temples. The most important ones are the Temple of Concordia, the best preserved; the Sanctuary of Demeter, the oldest building in the city, and the Temple of Zeus, one of the greatest of all antiquities. The National Archaeological Museum preserves all finds of the area, especially the telamone, colossal human figures in marble.
The city nowaday stands on the hill overlooking the ancient acropolis. The historical center offers the Cathedral characterized by the bell tower remained unfinished. Also worth visiting the Abbey of Santo Spirito, with the front in Gothic and the interiors in baroque style. Near the church is the birthplace, with a small museum, of Luigi Pirandello, the famous writer who was born here in 1867. The most popular seaside resort of Agrigento is undoubtedly San Leone, with a long sandy beach. The Lido is also equipped with a small port where small and medium boats can moor.
