Avellino is the chief town of the so-called Irpinia region, a wide zone situated in the center of Campania dominated from the massive montains of the Appennines, the Picentini and the Partenio mounts, in the Alto Sabato valley.

The strategic position of Avellino soon recalled the interest of the Roman that not only thanks to the wonderful roman villa have left one indelebile trace here built up on the hill where today the Dome rises, a node of obliged transit that connected Salerno with Benevento.
