The Bracciano Lake is encircled by many castles that the local population built in order to defend against the saracen invasions, and that became the residences of nobles who inhabited these villages. From the end of the eleventh century the territory of Bracciano was property of the Prefetti di Vico family, that constructed its stronghold on the Saint Giacomo hill top. At the beginning of XV century became a possession of the Orsini family that transformed the stronghold in the present castle. In 1496 the territory was besieged from the troops of Pope Alexander VI. The convent of Saint Maria Novella, that nowadays accommodates the Civic Museum and the Comunale Historical Archives and the bastion "la Sentinella" represent the most beautiful historical sites of the zone.
On the Bracciano Lake it is possible to stay in splendid hotels, farm holidays, bed and breakfast and holiday houses that often are set in the characteristic villages or on the surrounding hills.
