Gargano is a stocky promontory of about 2000 kmq in the northern Puglia formed by a mountain massif that outstretch for 70 km in the Adriatic sea and that for its particular conformation is called the "Spur of Italy". The area is delimited in the south by the gulf of Manfredonia and in the north by the Tremiti Islands archipelago and it is occupied nearly entire by mounts and plateaus covered by wide woods of pines, ilexs and beeches.
But Gargano is renowned above all for its two hundred kilometers of coast in which there are stretches high and intented, with the splendid stacks and marine coves, and stretches characterized by wide sand and pinewoods. In common they have the beatiful sea of Puglia that impress for the limpidity of its waters. On the coast there are the most famous localities of the zone like Vieste, Peschici and Manfredonia, which are all renowned seaside resorts. Not distant from the coast we find the Tremiti Islands archipelago, that for its landscapes, crystalline water, beauty of depth and the fascination of history are a nearly obliged stopover.
The inner area of the region is scantily inhabited and is characterized by an unpolluted landscape that it fascinates for the natural beauties and variety of its vegetation, safeguarded by the Gargano National Park. On these hills rises the village of San Giovanni Rotondo, where lived the famous Padre Pio from Pietralcina, that nowaday is a destination for a great number of religious tourists.
