Apulia is called for its particula shape also the heel of the "boot", being set in the most south-easthern part of Italy, a mostly plain landscaped region with the exception of modest elevations in the Gargano cape and the Murge plateau. In spite of the homogeneity of its territory, Apulia offers an amazing variety of images and scenaries.
The cities of Puglia fix in one's memory for their unique buildings and constructions: one of the most obvious example is the "trulli" roofed houses, typical cone shaped constructions in Alberobello; Castel del Monte, intentionally built up by Frederic II of Swabian, near Andria; Lecce, with its historical city center in which prevails the Baroque style; the Romanesque cathedrals of Trani and Bari, and many other smaller city centers of rare fascination like Otranto and Gallipoli.
It is therefore impossible not to exalt the Apulean Adriatic sea boasting 800 km of coastline, mainly sloping slowly from the sandy beaches, it features the extraordinary beauty of the water and sky colors as in the Gargano and Salento zones. The fabulous Tremiti Islands have also to be visited, set at short distance from the coast, for they offer unforgattable scenes.
Finally the religious tourism, that concentrates around San Giovanni Rotondo, where is set the sanctuary of San Padre Pio da Petralcina, the Devout Father. For all this reasons Puglia almost represents an ideal destination for travellers wishing to alternate the pleasures of the precious nature and the sea to artistic and cultural journeys. |
