4 Hotels in Lake Orta, Italy
Lake Orta, the ancient "Cusius", is a northern Italy basin situated in Piedmont region, between Lake Maggiore and the Valsesia area. As the other alpine lakes, Lake Orta, is a basin of glacial origin which extends at 290 meters of altitude for more than 14 km and a width of approximately 2,5 km, reaching its maximum depth (143 meters) in the southern section, in proximity of the island of San Giorgio. Lake Orta has only one tributary, the Nigoglia river. Differently from the other alpine lakes of Italy, the Nigolia river leaves Orta Lake towards north crossing the city of Omegna before joining the river Strona and subsequently the river Toce, tributary of Lake Maggiore.
Perhaps because of that deep atmosphere which characterizes Lake Orta, or the proximity of the more famous Lake Maggiore, it does not enjoy that success and that international reputation that on the contrary Lake Orta would deserve.
Less sumptuous than Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta is however rich of history, ancient monuments and villas as well as splendid gardens. Surrounded by verdant hills, Lake Orta offers spectacular views in the shade of the surrounding mountains, among which the peak of Mottarone dominates the valley. It is right this charming landscape that inspired numerous artists and writers who described the villages of Lake Orta in their own works: among the most notorious artists, we can mention Honoré de Balzac, Piccolomini and Eugenio Montale.
With regard to tourism, Lake Orta boasts excellent hotels, restaurants and campings sites. Among the tourist resorts of Lake Orta, the village of Orta San Giulio, Pettenasco, Gozzano and Omegna are the most visited.
