Lampedusa is the largest island of the Pelagie archipelago, including Linosa and Lampione. Although territorially belongs to Italy the island is closer to the African coast, which is just over 100 km. Thanks to its strategic location in the heart of the Mediterranean sea it was a landing stage for Greeks, Romans and Arabs and later was for a long time a cove of pirates. Precisely for this Lampedusa boasts a significant archaeological heritage and in Cala Pisana there are remains that dated back to the Neolithic.
At the same time the isolation that comes from the distance from the coast has preserved the island, which still maintains its original wild appearance and it is the habitat for rare plants and animals. The landscape is characterized by vast prairies and bare mountains remembers the African continent more than Europe. The coasts are jagged and presents creeks sometimes rocky and sometimes sandy. The Bay of Rabbits, probably the most beautiful beach of Lampedusa, is a nature reserve and it is one of the last remaining egg-laying sites in the Mediterranean sea.
The seabed of the island are particularly rich in flora and fauna and is a true paradise for the passionates of diving. Thanks to its small size it is possibleto make the tour of the island by boat in a few hours and discover the numerous small bays and beaches. The sea water, always clean and transparent and the warm climate for almost all year make Lampedusa a popular tourist destination. Nowaday, the Pelagie archipelago is connected to Sicily by a ferry service with the seaport of Porto Empedocle, near Agrigento, and by the airport.
