Cristoforo Benigno Crespi - Busto Arsizio-born - became a successful trader in cotton with the aid of a broker friend, buying and selling in Persia. Charmed by Baghdad, in 1879, he built a Moor villa on land near the lake where he had spent his childhood and where he had recovered from tisi.
